Death in the operating room: what support for caregivers?

2024-03-14 15:35:43

Patient deaths occurring in the operating room have, due to their unpredictability and brutality, a potential emotional impact on caregivers. However, there is no recommendation on what to do after such an event. Intraoperative deaths are to date neither quantified nor analyzed.

In this context, a study carried out by the anesthetists-resuscitators of the Anesthesia-Resuscitation-Perioperative Medicine and Pain Research Center of Lille University Hospital aims to explore these impacts, with a view to providing support to professionals.

The objectives are:

Eassess the prevalence of intraoperative deaths and develop a reference method to find and monitor this data on a national scale.

Study their psychological impact on caregivers throughthrough a national survey. Do un inventory of existing systems local support.

Survey caregivers to determine their expectations in terms of accompaniment and support. Train a few key caregivers in operating theaters in debriefing and defusing techniques to optimize support after cases of significant death and/or serious adverse events. Evaluate the benefit in terms of reducing the psychological impact of prevention strategies based on defusing and debriefing

A call for donations campaign is open on a dedicated page of the Lille University Hospital Endowment Fund.
