Tributes from around the world poured in as soon as the death was announced. French President Emmanuel Macron hailed “a friend of France, a queen of hearts” having “forever marked his country and his century”. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres underlined the “grace, dignity and devotion” of Elizabeth II, who was a “reassuring presence during decades of far-reaching change”. For his part, US President Joe Biden hailed “a stateswoman of incomparable dignity and consistency”.
