Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) travels to Switzerland on Thursday. A declaration of intent on the European airspace defense system “European Sky Shield” is to be signed on Friday in Bern at a trilateral meeting with the Confederation and Germany. Tanner will also meet her counterparts from Switzerland and Germany, Viola Amherd, and Boris Pistorius as part of her visit.

After Austria, Switzerland also announced on Tuesday that it would join the initiative. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s proposal for a “European Sky Shield” has been joined by Germany and 16 other NATO countries and NATO candidate Sweden. France, Italy and Poland are not included. Paris objects to the fact that technology from Israel and the USA is also to be purchased for the project.
