Delhaize Union Refusals: The Impact on the Transition to Duty-Free and Workers’ Demands

After the union refusals of the support plan proposed by Delhaize management, the latter ended the discussions on Wednesday and confirmed its final proposal. “This forceful move is a declaration of war,” reacted Myriam Delmée, president of Setca.

“This decision was predictable. But what Delhaize does not understand is that this will create immense disorder at the time of the transition to duty-free,” continues the trade unionist. “Management lost much more by refusing to negotiate than by agreeing to discuss.”

“We don’t want to spit in the soup, the workers’ fight has enabled progress, such as the increase in the transition bonus,” says Myriam Djegham, national secretary of the CNE. “But although management has given up things, its proposal does not correspond to the demands of workers. With incentive bonuses to retire, or by pushing employees to resign, the company absolves itself of the responsibility of dismissing its staff.”

On the side of the Dutch-speaking Christian union ACV Puls, we consider it positive that the management at least implements what was on the table. The union, however, wishes to continue negotiations, believing that a certain number of points still need to be clarified. “For example, we don’t know what will happen if one of the franchisees goes bankrupt,” notes Kristel Van Damme. According to her, it is not excluded that other actions by workers will still be organized. “There are few things on the table, we need to reassure people.”
