The management of Delhaize has more than 400 potential buyers for the 128 stores that the lion brand has in its own management and wishes to franchise, it announced on Monday after a new works council which came to an end.
“There is at least one candidate for every store and at least two candidates for 90% of supermarkets. Discussions with these potential candidates are continuing,” Delhaize management announced in a statement.
The management, which had planned to explain this Monday morning certain support measures for workers affected by the consequences of its “Future Plan”, regrets that the unions left the works council “prematurely”.
On the union side, we confirm that we left the meeting “after a quarter of an hour”. “The management does not want to engage in a dialogue with the workers’ representatives and even less in a negotiation”, deplores Myriam Delmée, president of Setca.
The measures, which management details in a statement, include awarding in-store workers a bonus “for their continued efforts to provide quality service” to customers. This bonus should amount to 1,500 euros, plus 100 euros per year of seniority.
Delhaize also refers to a “written confirmation of the maintenance of all salary and working conditions for store employees, signed by Delhaize and the future independent buyer”. In addition, in-store associates with time credit would keep their current bonuses, with Delhaize committing to make up the difference in the future. For a full-time employee with 17 years of seniority, this would therefore mean a bonus of 3,200 euros.
The management finally confirms that a buyer will be found for the 128 supermarkets and that the stores will remain under their own management until a buyer is found. “Delhaize therefore undertakes not to close any of these 128 supermarkets under the Future Plan. This guarantee is valid at least until the end of 2028″, continues the management.
In addition, regarding job losses at head office level, Delhaize announces “an improved severance package for impacted employees.” “Our intention remains to keep the number of departures to a minimum”, concludes the management.
