‘Delicious’: a period film about the invention of the first restaurant

After tackling more personal themes through “My heroes”, “The taste of wonders” and “The family spirit”, Eric Besnard tries with “Delicious” to a new genre: that of the period film.

Although inspired by real facts, the plot of this one remains however very fictitious. In truth, the first restaurant was born in 1782, in the Royal Palace of Paris, following the abolition of corporations, explains the director. A measure adopted by the comptroller general of finances of Louis XVI in 1776, which will allow merchants, hitherto confined to a single product, to offer their customers a more extensive offer.

estimating that “no historical figure was equal to the invention, Eric Besnard, however, preferred to deviate from reality and center his plot around a character from province in order to reinforce the symbolic dimension of his film.

Because beyond a film on the art of gastronomy, “Délicieux” is above all a film policyshowing the cleavage which existed in the 18th century, between the people and the nobility. A theme which, from the director’s point of view, echoes the current situation:

For forty years, the gaps have continued to grow between those who know, who are connected, those who have taste and good taste, and those who have nothing. The story repeats itself…

“Delicious”, a film to discover this Tuesday, September 5 at 8:30 p.m. on La Trois, and in replay on audio for 7 days.
