The US airline Delta Air Lines had to delay a flight by four hours because a swarm of bees settled on the wing of an airplane.

The machine was scheduled to fly from Houston to Atlanta at 12:25 p.m. local time and, according to the flight data, did not start until around 4:30 p.m. due to the insects – about four hours late.

“Believe it or not, Delta Flight 1682 from Houston-Bush to Atlanta was delayed on May 3rd after a friendly group of bees apparently crashed into the Sharklet [dt.: Flügelohr] of our plane wanted to talk shop. No doubt to exchange views on the current conditions at the airport,” a Delta spokesman told US media.

The 92 passengers were not on board when the bees landed on the Airbus A320. Among the passengers was a journalist who reported on the bizarre case on Twitter.

“My flight from Houston is delayed because bees have accumulated on the tip of a wing,” Anjali Enjeti wrote, posting a photo of the bee-infested wing. “They won’t let us on board until they remove the bees. But how on earth is that supposed to work? Won’t they leave the wing when we take off?” she asked.

Apparently no beekeeper was called because he shouldn’t have touched the plane, the passenger continued. Instead, they tried to expel the insects with exhaust gases. But: “The bees were not impressed.”

In the end, the solution to the problem was quite simple: the bees were shaken off as the plane started to move from the gate, according to a spokesman. Passenger Enjeti: “As soon as our plane’s engine started, the bees flew away!!! All Delta had to do was turn on the plane.”
