It is an artificial intelligence “rock star” that EPFL welcomed on Friday. “Rock star”, the expression is from Martin Vetterli himself, president of the institution, who gave Demis Hassabis an honorary doctorate. Little known to the general public, the latter is indeed one of the world stars of artificial intelligence (AI). The 46-year-old Englishman notably founded the company DeepMind, of which he is the director, one of the main AI research companies in the world. He is also the founder and director of Isomorphic Labs, a digital biology company carrying out drug research, which has just opened a branch at EPFL. These two firms belong to the American giant Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
