The possibility of the mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei, being the presidential candidate of Chile Vamos in 2025 is getting closer and closer. Although she may not be the only standard bearer of the sector.
Democrats, a party founded by former DC militants, recently announced the candidacy of Ximena Rincón to “compete with Matthei,” although they did not specify whether she would do so directly in the first round, or in a primary.
As indicated this Friday by the senator of the community, Matías Walker, Democrats “is a center party,” although he announced that “they are willing to reach agreements to give governability to the country.”
This Sunday, the party’s deputy, Miguel Ángel Calisto, went one step further and stated that the Democrats have “greater similarities with the center-right” and that, therefore, they hope to compete in a primary in the sector.
“For us it is tremendously important to participate in the presidential election process. And if that means competing with those with whom we have greater similarities, which is with the center-right, in this case with Chile Vamos, it seems to us that it is tremendously important to do so,” he said.
Furthermore, he indicated that “beyond the results, we believe that Democrats should be the center of a new conglomerate.”
His words were well received in Chile Vamos. The RN deputy, Eduardo Durán, pointed out that “to confront the left we need not to divide and have the strongest candidates.”
Along the same lines, the UDI parliamentarian, Henry Leal, declared that “Chileans are having a terrible time and that deserves a unity of purpose (…) The primaries contribute to that. Where we have differences, let’s resolve them with democracy through primaries,” he added.
Although Chile Vamos has been enthusiastic about the Democrats’ statements, the UDI senator, Juan Antonio Coloma, called on the conglomerate to focus on the municipal elections in October, before making a decision regarding the presidential election.
