Dengue Fever Outbreak in Bangladesh: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention Measures

Since January, 493 people have died from this viral infection which, in its mild form, causes no symptoms, or flu-like symptoms. In severe cases, vomiting, bleeding and severe abdominal pain, in particular, can prove fatal. In 2022, the country had recorded 281 deaths from dengue fever, underlines the general direction of the government’s health services.

This year, 104,359 cases of the disease have been recorded, a number up from the last figures of 2019 (101,454).

“The situation could deteriorate further if the government does not take effective measures to immediately prevent the spread of the disease,” expert Kaburul Bashar told the DPA news agency on Wednesday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned earlier this month of an outbreak of dengue fever in Bangladesh, which it fears has a high death rate. The small country almost landlocked in its large Indian neighbor is not the only one to fight against dengue fever: the problem is global and mainly linked to climate change and galloping urbanization.
