Dengue fever killed at least 21 people in one day in Bangladesh on Saturday, a record since health authorities began recording cases in 2000, bringing the total death toll to some 618.

The Directorate General of Health Services says 17 of the new deaths are due to mosquito-borne dengue fever transmission in Dhaka, making the capital the epicenter of the outbreak. Dhaka has recorded 456 deaths in total.

According to health authorities, the number of hospitalizations stands at nearly 127,700 cases, including nearly 59,600 cases in Dhaka, the daily dengue fever news bulletin said.

The General Directorate of Health Services revealed on Friday that it had discovered larvae of Aedes mosquitoes, vector agents of dengue fever, in 40 to 50% of houses in the city of Dhaka, a worrying sign of the worsening of the situation relating to this plague.

Urging people to rush to hospital when infected with the virus, Md. Nazmul Islam, deputy director of the health department, told reporters that an average of 75 people have died from dengue fever since last month. January.

In addition, 90 percent of patients admitted to hospital died within 72 hours of admission, he added, stressing the need for prompt hospitalization.

Last year, 281 people died of dengue fever in the South Asian country.

Dengue fever, first reported in the 1960s in Bangladesh as Dacca fever, has plagued the country’s health system, the WHO has warned.

It is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, an infection for which there is as yet no cure or specific curative treatment.
