The South American country of Peru is experiencing the largest dengue outbreak in history. The numbers of infections and deaths are revised upwards daily. The Peruvian health minister resigned on Thursday night (15th) after being criticized in Congress for her management of the health crisis. The authorities speak of at least 248 deaths and 147,000 infections. In northern Peru, no one can remember such a deadly outbreak of dengue fever. Rosa Gutiérrez Palomino has attributed the rise in infections to the high temperatures and rains that hit the north of the country in the first quarter of the year.

The dengue fever outbreak has caused hospitals to collapse in northern regions such as Piura, one of the hardest-hit regions, which as of June 13 had reported 82 deaths out of 248 across Peru. After Brazil, Peru has the second highest mortality rate in Latin America and the total figures are 365% higher than the average for the last five years, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Dengue is a disease endemic to tropical areas that causes high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, and in severe cases, bleeding that can lead to death.

according to dr Valerie Paz Soldán from the University of Cayetano Heredia has said the epidemic “got out of control”. The infectious disease expert also warns of an even worse situation: more precipitation is expected due to climate change and the El Niño phenomenon, and the virus “could be present all year round”.
