The Qdenga vaccine can be used to vaccinate people who have already had a first dengue infection. The viral infection must have been confirmed by laboratory diagnostics. People aged four and over are vaccinated. Stiko and DTG published the information on Thursday.
The vaccination involves two doses, the second of which is administered after three months. Basic immunization is recommended for people who want to travel to endemic areas with a high risk of infection.
The dengue virus is the most common virus transmitted to humans by mosquitoes worldwide. About 99 percent of cases reported in Europe involve travelers returning from endemic areas. The first infection with dengue viruses is usually asymptomatic or mild. In the case of second infections, however, the risk of a severe course is significantly increased.
Stiko cannot yet rule out the possibility that people who have not previously developed the disease will develop a more severe course of the disease after the infection. The Stiko is therefore not issuing a general vaccination recommendation for the time being.
Dengue was widespread for many decades, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The virus is transmitted primarily by yellow fever mosquitoes and occasionally by Asian tiger mosquitoes. Due to the effects of climate change, the Asian tiger mosquito is also spreading in Switzerland.
