Reimbursement of dental care by Social Security will drop from 70 to 60% on October 15, 2023. The government therefore wants to reorganize this branch of health and increase prevention among 3-24 year olds. But patients without mutual insurance will now find themselves with a higher remaining payment than people with mutual insurance, denounces 60 Million Consumers.

Reimbursement of dental care will change from October 15, 2023. Social Security will only reimburse 60% of these costs (compared to 70% until now), in accordance with the measures announced last June. This reduction should allow Health Insurance to make 500 million euros in savings… to the detriment of patients, reports 60 Million Consumers.

Young people less well covered by health insurance

The Ministry of Health indicated in June that it wanted to operate a

“preventive turn”

considering that the dental specialty is

“historically oriented towards repair and curative”

. The 2023-2028 dental agreement signed in July 2023 provides for an increase of 4% in conservative care for all and 30% in preventive procedures for 3-24 year olds. Oral examination will now be covered 100% every year and more every three and fluoride varnish coverage will concern 3-24 year olds and only 6-10 year olds.

However, these measures intended to better protect 3-24 year olds will disadvantage young people without supplements, denounce 60 million consumers. The amount of their care will in fact increase more than for the rest of the population. For example, if the remaining charge for a devitalization is today 12 euros, it will increase to 16 euros from October 15. From January 1, 2025, it will be €21.63 for 3-24 year olds, compared to €16.64 for others.

Second problem pointed out by 60 million consumers: the difficulty of seeking treatment with the drop in reimbursement by Social Security. If annual oral exams will now be 100% covered for 3-24 year olds,

“it will not necessarily be possible to carry out treatment afterwards”

car

” the care […] will only be 60%”,

explains Nathalie Delpin, president of the Union of Women Dental Surgeons cited by the association.
