Deputies praise investments in surveillance of the border with Namibia – Jornal OPaís

The president of the 2nd Commission of the National Assembly, Ruth Mendes, highlighted, this Tuesday, the Executive’s investments in the installation of the center of the technological control and surveillance system, aiming to guarantee the inviolability of the border between the province of Cunene and the Republic of Namibia

This is the first Command and Control Center in the country, installed in September 2023, in the border town of Santa Clara, which includes a 16 meter high tower, viewing cameras within a radius of 27 kilometers and radar 30.

The province of Cunene shares a border of 460 kilometers with the Republic of Namibia, 340 of which are land and 120 are river.

Ruth Mendes, who was speaking to the press at the end of her working visits to the Santa Clara border post, said that modern electronic equipment is, in a certain way, facilitating border surveillance and security, in the context of combating merchandise trafficking, drugs and fuel smuggling.

He explained that borders are means that help commercial exchanges, entry of goods and services, as well as support for tourism, but it is necessary to take into account the illicit situations that may occur.

According to the deputy, the cases reported along the border are not worrying, but they demonstrate the sensitivity of the forces in continuing to work diligently to prevent and limit the frequent practice of these crimes.

The parliamentarian praised the organized way in which the Santa Clara customs post works, in the processing of goods, at a time when, at the level of SADC countries, the idea is to evolve towards joint borders.

“We noted some concerns regarding social conditions, among others, which affect the bodies that operate at the border, in the case of the Border Guard Police, General Tax Administration (AGT) and the Migration and Foreign Service (SME), we will report to who is entitled to its solution”, he stated.

In addition to evaluating the work carried out along the border, the delegation also visited the facilities of the National Police Pension Fund and the Social Security Institute of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA).

In relation to the FAA Social Fund, he recognized the work carried out at the provincial level focused on the implementation of agricultural projects, with large-scale rice production and others that lack financing for their execution.

He highlighted that these agricultural projects must be implemented in phases, in order to be completed, aiming at generational sustainability, taking into account the revenue results that they will bring to the fund.

Ruth Mendes considered the actions carried out to be positive, which leaves the 2nd Committee of the National Assembly satisfied, calling on the aforementioned bodies to continue working with the same dynamism.

Meanwhile, the delegate of the FAA Social Security Institute in Cunene, Maria Chaves, made it known that the institution controls 527 pensioners who benefit from regular assistance.

In terms of the project, he highlighted that the body has been developing, since 2022, the Mbimbi project, which covers more than 100 hectares, focused on improving seeds to promote agriculture.

He made it known that they still have some land for agricultural cooperatives, in the Mupa National Park, in the municipality of Cuanhama, which only require financing to get started.

The parliamentary delegation has been on a working visit to Cunene since the 10th, during which they assessed production levels in the Manquete agro-industrial project, located in the commune of Mocupe, municipality of Ombadja.

For this Wednesday, a visit to the structuring project for the Cafu canal water transfer system, inaugurated in April 2022, by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, is scheduled.

The 2nd Working Committee of the National Assembly deals with issues of Defense, Security, Internal Order, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland.
