Derry marks 40th anniversary of Halloween celebrations

Tens of thousands of visitors are flooding the streets of Derry this evening as the city marks the 40th anniversary of its iconic Halloween celebrations. What began as a modest community gathering in 1986 has officially evolved into Europe’s largest Halloween festival, drawing international crowds and major global media attention for its milestone parade and fireworks display.

Four Decades of Growth and International Reach

The milestone festivities reached their peak as the carnival parade kicked off at 7:00 PM, led by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Grace Uí Niallais. The celebrations have expanded far beyond local borders over the past forty years, transforming the walled city into a renowned global capital for the holiday.

“What began as a small-scale local event in 1986 has now grown into Europe’s largest Halloween festival and one of Ireland’s most famous cultural events,” Mayor Uí Niallais stated during the proceedings.

Tens of thousands of participants converged on the city centre, requiring extensive road closures, pedestrian management, and early arrival advisories. Foyle MP Colm Eastwood remarked that the festival’s remarkable trajectory stands as a testament to the dedication of local staff and hundreds of volunteers who have nurtured the gathering over the decades.

The international footprint of the festival is equally striking. For the 40th-anniversary milestone, the event is being beamed directly across the United States. The Fox Corporation is broadcasting the spectacle via television and its streaming service, LiveNOW from FOX, bringing the festivities into up to 90 million American households.

Coordinating Regional Events and Security Measures

While Derry serves as the epicenter of the celebrations, regional events are running concurrently in nearby Strabane. Minor traffic disruptions and localized road closures remain in place to accommodate family-friendly activities.

Castle Street in Strabane closed early this morning to host daytime events, while the town’s official fireworks display commenced at 7:00 PM from the Melvin Running Track. Local authorities implemented strict pedestrian and traffic restrictions around the running track and surrounding estates, including the Ballycolman Estate, to ensure public safety.

Council officials urged attendees to plan their journeys carefully and heed the guidance of on-site staff. Pet owners in the surrounding residential zones were also advised to take precautionary measures ahead of the evening pyrotechnics.
