Desjardins Credit Card Maintenance: Service Disruptions October 12-20

Beginning October 12, Mouvement Desjardins will temporarily disable several core credit card management features for its approximately four million accounts during a major backend migration to American tech provider Fiserv. Routine spending and online purchases will remain active throughout the multi-day system upgrade.

Management Functions Go Offline for Digital Architecture Transition

  • Maintenance Window: Essential management functions will stay offline from October 12 to October 20, while account data transitions to a new digital architecture.
  • Active Operations: Standard retail purchases, online checkouts, account balance checks, and fraud detection mechanisms continue running without disruption.
  • Required Pre-Planning: Cardholders must adjust credit limits, update personal contact details, or request PIN changes prior to the October 12 cutoff date.

System Migration to Fiserv Triggers Temporary Outages

The Mouvement Desjardins infrastructure overhaul stems from an aging software architecture. Mathieu Staniulis, VP Produits et Solutions chez Desjardins, explained that the previous system had reached the end of its functional lifespan. The financial institution partnered with American technology giant Fiserv to execute the transition.

This migration requires shifting data for roughly 4 million credit card accounts. While standard transactions will process normally, the technical handover forces the temporary suspension of specific account modification tools. Desjardins confirmed that fraud monitoring systems will stay fully operational during the upgrade window.

Specific Restrictions Facing Account Holders This Week

Beginning October 12 and lasting through October 20, cardholders will encounter strict limitations when attempting to manage their accounts. The offline functions include credit limit increases, limit splitting for business accounts, personal contact updates, PIN modifications, and selecting PINs for newly activated cards.

Additional restricted tasks involve the exchange and adjustment of BONIDOLLARS rewards, along with the replacement of defective cards. Desjardins advises clients to handle these administrative tasks in advance. However, if a card is lost or stolen during the upgrade, clients can still request suspension and replacement exclusively by phone through designated customer service channels.

Policy Shifts on Co-Held Accounts and Future Platform Benefits

Earlier announcements regarding the complete elimination of co-held credit cards—where participants share joint responsibility for the total balance—have been reversed by Desjardins. Existing co-held accounts retain their current status automatically. However, starting October 12, new applications for co-held cards will be paused until the institution builds the capability into its new system architecture.

As an alternative, primary cardholders can utilize secondary cards where additional users have purchasing access without debt liability. By mid-october, primary holders gain the digital ability to grant secondary users full visibility over statements and transactions online.

Once the transition concludes, Desjardins plans to roll out modernized features gradually. These include instant digital wallet integration for new cards without waiting for physical mail delivery, self-service transaction dispute options, real-time BONIDOLLARS balance updates, and streamlined corporate account management platforms.
