Detroit Motor Show 2022 | Automobilwoche.de

There hasn’t been a Detroit Motor Show since January 2019. The traditional start to the car year had already suffered greatly in previous years from the competition from the CES in Las Vegas. The move to the summer was supposed to give the fair new impetus, but due to the corona pandemic it had to be canceled twice. Now it’s time to start again.

But when the first visitors enter the fair on Saturday, many things will be different than before. Only ten premieres have been announced, where otherwise more than 50 new models have already been unveiled. Among other things, the electric Hummer, the new Toyota Tundra, the new Ford Mustang and the revised F-150 Lightning will be presented. Less than half as many journalists as usual have been accredited to report on the event. The exhibitors are also holding back. The big three American companies General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have large stands, as does Toyota, but European brands are rare.

The character of the trade fair will change significantly: Just like last year’s IAA Mobility, the focus will no longer be on premieres presented in the exhibition halls, but on experiences that are offered to visitors. Around the trade fair, those interested can try out electric cars and autonomous driving, drive over an off-road course and visit a monster truck show. Whether the concept works remains to be seen. The conclusion of the IAA Mobility was mixed.
