Devastating Earthquake in Herat, Afghanistan: Death Toll Surpasses 4000

Kabul: The death toll from the powerful earthquake in Herat, western Afghanistan has crossed 4000. Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said that nearly two thousand houses were completely destroyed in two earthquakes measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale.

Mullah Sheikh, the spokesperson of the disaster management authority, stated that more than 4000 people died in regarding 20 villages and houses from 1980 to 2000 were completely destroyed. He also informed that 35 rescue teams from different places are engaged in relief work in the earthquake affected areas.

The earthquake struck in Herat following 12 noon Indian time on Saturday. Afghanistan Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund visited the affected area of ​​Horat the other day. China has given Afghanistan 200,000 US dollars for emergency relief.

Herat is considered as the cultural capital of Afghanistan. About 1.9 million people live in the province, according to World Bank figures in 2019. Afghanistan is prone to frequent major earthquakes. In June last year, a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, killing 1,000 and injuring around 1,500.
