Athens – The great forest fires in the Dadia forest area near the Greek-Turkish border raged for the ninth day in a row on Sunday. The situation is very difficult, said the deputy governor of the region, Dimitris Petrovich, on the ERT station in the morning. “Unfortunately, we don’t see that the front can be contained and brought under control,” he said. On Monday it is expected that the wind will change and the flames might spread further.

The forests in the area have never been cut down – it is “virgin forest” that was deliberately left natural, said Petrovich. However, this now makes the extinguishing work much more difficult. Everything will be tried and a reinforcement of the emergency services has also been requested once more.
Forest and bush fires also continued in other parts of the country. However, most of the fires were kept under control over the weekend, including in north-west Athens and on the islands of Andros and Euboea. Overall, according to Greek civil protection, the risk of forest fires has decreased compared to last week. (APA/dpa)
