DOCTOR specialist in diseases from the Division of Endocrine, Metabolic and Diabetes, National Central General Hospital, dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Jakarta Farid Kurniawan, gave the view that diabetes sufferers who will undergo the Hajj pilgrimage must make several important preparations before leaving for the Holy Land.

“To reduce risks, diabetes patients must prepare special steps before leaving for Hajj, starting with consulting a doctor,” he said as quoted by Between.

According to him, diabetes sufferers need to consult a doctor about possible complications and adjust the dose of medication or type of insulin to be used, and ask the doctor to provide a certificate regarding the patient’s diabetes condition and treatment.

A certificate regarding the condition and treatment of diabetes is very important so that Hajj health workers can provide appropriate medical treatment if the patient needs it in the Holy Land.

“The letter contains the patient’s name, contact person, group or group, as well as information about the medicines consumed. This will help the health team or organizing committee to identify the congregation’s needs,” explained Farid.

Farid also recommends that diabetes sufferers carry sufficient or excess medication supplies so that they are always available when needed.

For diabetics who need insulin, he suggests that insulin be stored in a bag or cooler while on the plane and immediately stored in the refrigerator after arriving at the accommodation to maintain its quality.

He also reminded diabetes patients to ensure sufficient supplies of insulin pens and needles during the Hajj pilgrimage.

“If possible, measure blood sugar before and after worship such as tawaf and sa’i to keep blood sugar levels stable. Apart from that, make sure to bring a source of sugar such as candy or snacks to prevent hypoglycemia,” he added.

Farid emphasized that diabetes patients also need to get vaccinations such as meningitis, influenza and pneumonia to reduce the risk of infection during the Hajj. (Z-10)
