Dictionary.com’s 2026 Word of the Year: Maxxing

Online dictionary Dictionary.com named “maxxing” its word of the year for 2026, pointing to a surge in internet culture centered on relentless personal optimization across daily life.

From Video Game Strategy to Digital Slang

The term functions as a short form of “maximizing,” serving as both an independent verb and a universal suffix. Dictionary.com reported that usage of the word and its associated search queries jumped by 1,000 percent in 2026.

Roots of the expression trace back to tabletop and role-playing game circles via “min-maxing,” a strategy where players dedicate all available resources to enhance a single character statistic while neglecting others. During the 2010s, the term migrated into manosphere and incel subcultures through “looksmaxxing,” which referred to men attempting to boost their physical attractiveness and romantic prospects through intensive grooming and fitness routines.

Digital culture further amplified the phrase as controversial manosphere influencers gained traction online. livestreamer Braden Peters, known online as Clavicular, popularized extreme focuses on male physical appearance before facing sexual assault charges in 2025.

Peters pleaded not guilty to those charges in October 2026.

Everyday Optimization Across Social Media

Despite its toxic origins, younger generations across TikTok and other social media platforms detached the suffix from its darker connotations. Users adopted the phrase to describe maximizing virtually any mundane activity.

Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for the Dictionary Media Group at IXL Learning, noted that the vocabulary choice captures a society obsessed with pushing every action to its absolute limit. People now regularly use compounds like “proteinmaxxing” for breakfast, “tokenmaxxing” for squeezing maximum output from artificial intelligence tools at work, and “cozymaxxing” for a relaxing Friday evening.

Additional variants documented include “hardmaxxing,” which involves extreme diets, cosmetic surgery, or even intentional bone-breaking, alongside “softmaxxing,” which resembles a minor glow-up like getting a new haircut. Other terms include “jestermaxxing” for using humor to gain social clout, and “sleepmaxxing” for optimizing rest.

The 2026 Shortlist and Broader Cultural Signals

Dictionary.com selects its annual word to capture significant cultural shifts by reviewing articles, search engine queries, and social media data. The dictionary explicitly includes slang terms that other publishers often ignore.

The 2026 shortlist featured several other cultural touchstones. “Affordability,” “data center,” and “Odyssey” all vied for the top spot, with the latter driven by a surge in online searches following the release of Christopher Nolan’s cinematic adaptation of Homer’s epic. Another contender was “Unc,” a generational slang term used by Gen Z and Gen Alpha to describe older individuals perceived as outdated or uncool.
