Digital documentary: “Papaflessas, the prankster of souls”

George Dikaios Flessasby world Papaflessaswas one of the most decisive figures of the struggle of 1821. He was born in Poliani, Messinia in 1789 and studied at the famous School of Dimitsana. Later he was ordained a deacon and became a monk at the Velanidia Monastery near Kalamata, where he took the priestly name Grigorios.

On June 21, 1818 his compatriot Panagiotis Anagnostopoulos he introduced him to Philiki Etairia under the codename of Armodios. Papaflessas devoted himself soul and body to it case of national uprising and managed to excite and seduce many Greeks.

On May 20, 1825 in the historic battle in Maniaki with Ibrahim many Greeks deserted and thus only 300 warriors remained. Papaflessas did not leave this particular location, despite repeated promptings. Papaflessas fell heroically after he was struck in the back by an Albanian, the Huso.
