A triumphant return press conference for the movie “Monster” (released on June 2), which won two awards at the Cannes International Film Festival, was held at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on the evening of the 29th, coinciding with the return of director Hirokazu Kore-eda (60). Yuji Sakamoto (56), who won the screenplay award, was also present.
This work is a human drama that depicts the end of the search for “monsters” from the perspective of each character, with two boys as the main characters. It was also the first time for a Japanese film to win the Queer Palm Award, which is one of the independent awards given to works dealing with LGBTQ+ (sexual minorities).
In the fine weather, Mr. Sakamoto complained that he was a “vulnerable screenwriter” and “really, it’s already tight”.
“I was happy that people just said, ‘Let’s do a job,’ but I was so pissed off that I was so lazy that I followed them… I apologized, ‘I really can’t write, I’m sorry,’ and everyone around me said, ‘I’m sorry.’ It’s okay. I can write it.”
Except for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, he seems to be working all the time. “When I write scripts, I sit at my desk every morning and sit in front of my computer all the time until I go to bed at night. My pedometer is 12 steps a day. But…”
Regarding the weight of the trophy given to him by Director Kore-eda, he replied, “Honestly, I don’t really feel it.” Although she was evaluated at a global film award, she made the audience laugh with her repeated negative remarks.
“It’s not a fun job, and nothing can be gained except by earnestly writing letters. Also, I’m pressed for deadlines and have no choice but to work steadily in front of my computer, so I don’t feel very happy.”
When asked about his reward, he revealed, “Yesterday, I bought Morozoff’s pudding at Hikarie (in Shibuya).” Regarding her future work, she said, “For the time being, I have decided to write a movie (screenplay). The drama has not been decided.”
This work is the first tag work of Director Kore-eda and Mr. Sakamoto. Director Kore-eda said, “If there is a chance, I would like to ask you to write the script again.” He looked happy.
