Dis-Chem Posts Earnings Drop and Lower Interim Dividends

The Bottom Line

  • Capital deployment into the digital unit X, bigly labs, and loyalty program discounts squeezed short-term margins and reduced interim dividends by 12.9%.

Earnings Compression Driven by Digital Investments

The contraction in profitability stands in direct contrast to top-line growth. Retail revenue advanced 8.2% to R19.6 billion, while comparable pharmacy store revenue grew 3.4%.

Despite higher sales volumes, basic earnings per share dropped 13.3% to 64.1 cents, and basic headline earnings per share decreased 12.8% to 64.3 cents. The earnings pressure materialized from multiple operational fronts, led by heavy spending on the group’s new digital engine, X, bigly labs, where associated investment costs doubled during its start-up phase.

Wholesale Expansion and Retail Footprint Growth

The group’s wholesale division recorded a 9.6% increase in revenue to R18.4 billion. Sales from the wholesale business to Dis-Chem’s own retail stores remained the largest contributor, rising 10.3%. Meanwhile, external revenue generated from independent pharmacies and The Local Choice franchises grew 7.0%. The wholesale unit now supplies 1,690 independently owned pharmacies, capturing approximately 89% of the independent pharmacy market.

During the six-month window, the group added 14 retail pharmacy stores, including two new “Store of the Future” formats located at Melrose Arch and Irene Village. This brought the total stable to 328 retail pharmacy stores and 36 retail baby stores as of August 31, 2026.

Digital Infrastructure Spending and Margin Pressures

Retail expenses climbed 13.7% due to new store openings and the expansion of X, bigly labs. Retail employment costs, which account for 53.0% of total retail expenses, increased 12.8%. Net financing costs also rose 11.2% to fund ongoing capital expenditure and network expansion.

The company noted that the deployment of its Better Rewards loyalty program generated temporary price deflation in retail sales. Overall, group expenses increased 12.1%. The heavy capital investment of R240 million in e-commerce re-platforming and order management capabilities directly impacted short-term profitability.

Revenue Performance Following the Reporting Period

Looking ahead at post-period trading, group revenue grew 7.9% year-on-year across the seven weeks from September 1 to October 19, 2026. Retail revenue rose 7.2% with the addition of five new trading stores, and external wholesale revenue accelerated by 12.4%.

For the full 2027 financial year, the group plans to open 30 retail pharmacy stores, with 19 already trading. Management declared a gross interim dividend of 25.62 cents per share, down 12.9% from the prior period, based on a payout ratio of 40% of headline earnings. The company anticipates a more even distribution of earnings between the first and second halves of the fiscal year as the cost base for X, bigly labs normalizes.
