‘Blue Beetle’ has raised a disappointing 25 million dollars in its first weekend in the United States, well below ‘Flash’, which Warner released last June. At the international box office it has collected about 18 million, reaching a total of 43 million globally. One of DC’s weakest releases and that doesn’t put it on the right track to make up for the 100 million dollar budget.
Warner Bros. has said that the tropical storm that has hit California has not done the box office any favors, especially in Los Angeles. According to Exhibitor Relations Co.’s box office meter, the top 10 markets for ‘Blue Beetle’ are, from largest to smallest, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Phoenix, Atlanta, DC and Philadelphia. Hurricane Hilary, which became a tropical storm at landfall, has shaken Southern California and has had a negative effect on the film’s box office, since it was impossible to go to theaters.
“The impact of the storm is expected to be significant,” Warner Bros. said. The $25 million opening marks the worst for the DC Universe since the 2020 premiere of ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ which debuted simultaneously on HBO Max when the 60% of US theaters were closed due to the pandemic, and it grossed $16.7 million.
First impressions
The 25 million debut of ‘Blue Beetle’ in the United States falls short of the 55 million achieved by ‘Flash’ and the 30.1 million of ‘Shazam! The fury of the gods’, but in Rotten Tomatoes it has the highest percentage of positive reviews of the three, at 76% to ‘Flash’s’ 64% and ‘Shazam’s’ 49%. Early reviews have mostly highlighted the film’s Latino representation, which is a breath of fresh air in the superhero landscape, though the story doesn’t break any mold either. They have also praised the performance of Xolo Maridueña and the family aspect of the story.
We will have to see how the US collection progresses while its main market, Los Angeles, continues to suffer the effects of Hilary, the first tropical storm in the region in more than 80 years.
