Want to take care of your hearing? Again, one of the solutions is on your plate. According to a recent study conducted by Canadian scientists, eating more seafood reduces the risk of developing hearing problems by up to 20%. The key compound? Omega-3. The results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.

As reported by Daily Mail, scientists at the University of Guelph have found that consuming higher levels of omega-3s found in oily fish can reduce the risk of hearing problems associated with aging. To reach this conclusion, the team collected self-reported data on hearing health and levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, in the blood of more than 100,000 people.

Results ? They found that people with the highest amount of DHA in their blood were 16% less likely to experience difficulty hearing. Additionally, they were also 11% less likely to report difficulty following conversations when there is background noise. This study suggests “a role for DHA in maintaining hearing function and reducing the risk of age-related hearing loss“, underlines Dr. Michael McBurney, professor at the College of Biological Science and author of this research.

Before recalling thathigher levels of DHA have already been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, cognitive impairment and deathIn light of these findings, scientists say omega-3s may help protect inner ear cell health or dampen inflammatory responses to loud noises, chemicals, or infections.
