Discover the BMW CE 02: A Stylish Electric Motorcycle Built for Urban Adventures

2023-07-07 17:30:00

Coming from the eponymous concept presented in 2021, the BMW CE 02 is officially unveiled on July 7 in its final version. We were able to discover it during a static presentation. If the characteristics may seem in the background, this small BMW cut for the city is clearly not lacking in style.

The BMW group is continuing its path towards carbon neutrality and this time it is the Motorrad division which presented a new electric vehicle, the BMW CE02, the brand’s third electric two-wheeler after the C Evolution (2014) and its successor. , CE04 (2022). Unlike the BMW CE 04, the maxi scooter already tested in our columns, this CE 02 is dedicated to use in town, especially in its least “powerful” and least enduring configuration, we will come back to this.

Officially unveiled on July 7, the editorial staff of Cleanrider was invited to discover it in preview, which the manufacturer also calls “the eParkourer”, the ideal machine for moving around in urban areas. And you will see that to celebrate its 100th anniversary, Motorrad continue to play on this stylistic audacity which seems to benefit the commercial success of the CE 04 – if we are to believe the words of the French BMW teams.

Below, our presentation video of CE 02. Important to know: during filming, some information was not yet specified, but you can find it in this article.

A small electric motorcycle that inspires “fun”

On the subject of design, there is no doubt that this BMW CE 02 takes up the design codes of the CE 04, with an original look to say the least. But truth be told, that was to be expected, as the CE02 concept shown earlier clearly set the tone.
Perhaps the design of this CE02 will not be unanimous (don’t hesitate to tell us in the comments), but it is clear that this model challenges with its lines are angular and its style a little “rough formwork “.

More in detail, the CE 02 is mounted on 120/80 R14 tires at the front and 150/70 R14 at the rear. Small 14-inch wheels that suggest this bike should offer some pretty awesome handling. But beware, the machine can weigh up to 132 kg in its configuration with two batteries.

Because yes, the CE 02 is available in two versions, double and single battery. In the latter case the weight drops to 119 kg. This is not nothing and this is probably also explained by the presence of solid rims (as on the CE04) in particular, but advice to those who are worried about it, know that this small motorcycle is equipped with a reverse gear electric to assist you in manoeuvres.

Anyway, with a seat height of 75 cm this bike should be accessible to a wide clientele. The CE 02 is 1.97 m long, 87.6 cm wide with mirrors and 84.5 cm without mirrors, for a total height of 1.14 m.

On behalf of Cleanrider, David Nogueira was able to discover the definitive version of BMW’s first electric motorcycleA small adventurer built for the city that should prove fun to drive around town, embellished with a few touches of technology. Starting with the 3.5-inch diagonal LCD screen as a counter and a USB type-C socket to charge your smartphone. Our model exhibited on site was also equipped with a smartphone holder (optional) on which owners can launch a dedicated mobile application. Thus connected to the motorcycle via Bluetooth, the smartphone can act as a GPS navigation system, for example.

There are also Full LED headlamps, keyless start, reverse gear, a 37 mm diameter telescopic fork at the front and a single-arm suspension at the rear, not to mention the standard ABS at the front coupled with 239 mm diameter discs at the front. At the rear, it would therefore be a matter of conventional hydraulic braking, without anti-lock and we regret it, using a 220 mm disc.

50 cm3 or 125 cm3: with or without a license

Once past the first approach, it is necessary to take an interest in the motorization part of the BMW CE 02. As we mentioned above, this motorcycle is offered in version 1 and 2 batteries, two configurations which have a direct impact on the autonomy, of course, but also on performance.

In the two-battery version, the CE02 promises a power of 11 kW, which categorizes it as being a 125 cm3 thermal equivalent with the associated license/training constraints. In this configuration, BMW announces a range of 90 km, a top speed of 95 km/h and a 0 to 50 km/h achieved in 3 seconds. Be careful however, this only seems possible under the driving mode called “Flash” offered as an option in addition to Flow and Surf modes, equivalent to eco and normal modes.

The performances collapse in single-battery configuration of this motorcycle which now bears the reference of CE02 AM and now corresponds to a 50 cm3 thermal equivalent. Here, the range and the maximum speed are halved and the engine power drops to 4 kW. At the time of writing these lines, the only characteristics we have for the battery concern the capacity which would be around 2 kWh and its weight of around 16 kg. Please note, these batteries are not removable and you will not be able to refuel them other than from the proprietary connector integrated into the motorcycle.

The objective for BMW with this single battery version is obviously to offer access to the widest possible clientele, including by addressing teenagers who have passed the necessary training, but we will see further that the prices can be dissuasive. and not really fitting with the services displayed here.

Some details on recharging and prices

During the presentation of this electric motorcycle by the BMW teams, we shared the first information on the charging times for this BMW CE 02 in version two which seemed rather interesting to us. The 20 to 80% would only take about 1h40 and it would take about 3h for the 0 to 100%. However, now that we have received the more detailed information, it seems to be a bit more complicated than that.

If it takes indeed about 1h40 (1h42, more exactly) to go from 20 to 80% it is rather necessary to count on 3h30 for the 0 to 100%. Why not, but the subject is that the times announced here are only accessible with the 1500 W fast charger… which is optional. And unfortunately it does not seem to be offered – at least for the moment – for purchase alone since it is integrated into a pack called “Highline”. This includes the addition of blue stickers, Bluetooth connectivity (we thought it was integrated as standard), smartphone support, pro saddle, heated grips, Flash riding mode (same for him on the 11 kW version !), as well as a SIM card. Please note that this is not intended to access motorcycle information remotely via a dedicated mobile application, for example, but only for the management of the teleservices offered by BMW, in other words, the maintenance of the motorcycle.

The problem is that this pack is charged 890 euros for the two versions of the CE 02, which, as you can see above, displays fairly high basic prices. Count 7,750 euros for this 50 cm3 equivalent and 8,750 euros for the 125 cm3 version… it stings!

Launch early 2024

So yes, the CE02 will probably not be accessible to all budgets, and this is already the case for the other products of the German premium brand, but let us specify all the same that the BMW CE 04 whose first deliveries have been made. from March 2022 already counts nearly 2,500 registrations at the end of the year.

A figure certainly well below the brand’s motorcycles which compatibilize more than 20,000 registrations per year. But BMW Motorrad confirms to us that these new electric mobility products are now attracting new customers with other needs than that of a big road car, for example.
The future will tell us more about the success of this CE 02, available from July 7 for pre-order. The start of production is scheduled for the last quarter of 2023 and the first deliveries during the first half of 2024.
