A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Guatemalan town of Antigua is as picturesque as a picture. Antigua is smaller than the capital, Guatemala City, but cleaner and safer. Rainbow colored colonial buildings, historic churches and convents, restaurants and cafes waiting for tourists. Anyone who loves nature and travel has everything here…the pearl of Guatemala, Antigua.

But it’s a bit confusing to know where Antigua is located… surrounded by four active volcanoes… Agua, Fuego, Acatenango and Pacaya in an active seismic zone. A series of earthquakes in 1773 destroyed this small town.

The most damaged that day was a beautiful cathedral believed to have been built in 1545. That is 200 years old ancient church. Even today its roof is open to the sky. Pigeons are nesting among the crumbling remains of pillars and carvings piled up in the side chapels.

Those volcanoes that once burned the city itself to ashes are today dear friends of the inhabitants of Antigua. They find a way to survive. The same volcanoes that caused untold destruction are major tourist attractions today. The world’s most active, 3,768-meter-high Volcan de Fuego, or Volcano of Volcanoes, is today the biggest tourist attraction. It has been erupting continuously since 2002. Every 15-30 minutes the volcano spews flaming lava bombs and ash clouds.

The nearby Acatenam Go Volcano is another beautiful sight. Tourists can see the sight of fire spitting into the night sky like flowers and mathaps. Local tour companies to Acatenango offer overnight camping .. Pacaya, just 50 km from Antigua town, is another tourist attraction. Pakaya, which was active until 2021, is no longer erupting or spewing fire. The lava that flowed out of Pakaya earlier has dried up and stuck. Walking along the freshly dried lava path is a lot of fun for tourists.

Antigua is blessed with some beautiful day views. The Santa Catalina Arch is the most famous place in Antigua. The Santa Catalina Arch is a canary-yellow color. It is believed to have been built in 1694. This arch was built for the nuns of the Santa Catalina Convent to pass from their convent to the school across the street without being seen by the public.

Today it is an iconic monument in Guatemala. Central Park is considered the heartbeat of Antigua. On the four sides of the park are beautiful buildings which are remnants of colonial rule. Here is a beautiful picture of Guatemala’s confluence of cultures. Some natives are like that. They will overcome the misfortunes they face through hard work and mental strength.
