How healing nature can be is no surprise to anyone who lives in the country. However, doctors from the Paracelsus Medical Private University have now shown that a week’s stay in the Alpine pastures leads to a significant improvement in the state of health and are advocating for “Alpine pastures on a health certificate”.

The surroundings and the altitude of the alpine pastures are not only good for cows in summer, people also benefit from them, says study leader Arnulf Hartl from the Institute for Ecomedicine at the PMU Salzburg: “The alpine pasture with a health certificate would be desirable. We have the altitude, the vitamin D, uneven ground – we have the biodiversity and it is important to use it accordingly.”

From July to September 2022, 26 study participants were sent to the mountain pastures in Riedingtal (Lungau) for a week. The test subjects came from urban centers and were neither used to animals nor to agricultural work. “After a week of hard work, these basic parameters emerged: higher cardiopulmonary fitness, red blood cells have rejuvenated and increased, blood lipids have improved and the main parameter was the change in the bacteria in the nose – the nasal microbiome,” says Hartl.

Nasal microbiome reacts positively to alpine conditions

You can see a detailed report on this study on Thursday, October 12th, at 9:05 p.m. on ORF2 “Am Schauplatz”.

The altered nasal microbiome acts like a gentle vaccination and ensures increased immune defense against inflammatory diseases. The PMU Salzburg is currently investigating how the healing power of nature affects people with lung disease. “There are city-associated diseases. More and more people in Austria live in cities and we have the challenge of making the healing originality of nature available to these people again,” says Hartl.

“The more you move in nature, the more strength you have in your body and the more joy in life you get,” says one study participant. “The air is of course better than in the city. There is no dust, there is no fine dust and you notice that you are getting better every day,” adds a second person.

“Back to nature will dominate the next decades”

“The international medical community has recognized this value of nature and politicians also support this through EU formats, which we also work with. This means that the ‘back to nature’ will dominate the next few decades for many reasons,” expects Hartl.
