Jerusalem, Israel.

The bloody ground offensive launched from Gaza by Hamas broke with its traditional strategy of launching rockets against Israel, which now says it is determined to eradicate the Palestinian Islamist movement to reestablish its military superiority and erase the affront.

Hamas was created in December 1987, at the beginning of the first Intifada (uprising) against the Israeli occupation, by militiamen who claimed to be members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

In the 1990s it became the spearhead of the armed struggle against Israel, after Yasser Arafat’s Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) prioritized a peace process whose promises were never fulfilled.

Hamas developed a large network of social aid and charities, which explains the increase in its influence and popularity, at the expense of a Palestinian Authority that many consider corrupt and complicit with Israel.

The current leader of Hamas (Arabic acronym for the Islamic Resistance Movement), Ismail Haniya, lives between Turkey and Qatar, while Yahya Sinwar, a hardline figure, heads the group in Gaza.

Mohamed Deif, Israel’s public enemy, leads the armed wing, the Ezzeldin al Qasam Brigades.

Hamas – considered a terrorist group by Israel, the United States and the European Union – expelled the Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas from the Gaza Strip in 2007.
