For the past few weeks, Netflix and VRT Max subscribers have been able to follow episodes of the series “Knokke Off”, a Dutch series which follows the adventures of several young people from wealthy families in the upscale seaside resort on our Belgian coast.
It is in this context that our Dutch colleagues from Telegraaf went for a short walk on the Knokke dike, to ask the inhabitants what they liked so much there. A report that did not go unnoticed since the responses of two “classy ladies”, as they are described in the newspaper, made the buzz.
“We like almost everything,” replies one of these ladies to the journalist. She then adds that she prefers when there are fewer people in town and hopes that the “Knokke off” series will not cause a massive influx of new tourists.

Nothing unusual so far. The sequel, on the other hand, is to say the least… original: “But that’s not really what annoys me. What really annoys me is the non-respect of certain things. Like people who are not well dressed…”, she continues. Before her friend intervenes: “The shorts for example…”. “We believe that certain standards should be maintained,” adds the other lady.

And to continue: “Sometimes there are people who come from France, with their fridgebox on the beach […] They don’t take advantage of the restaurants on site, although there are plenty of possibilities here. There are good caterers… And they arrive with their fridgebox. I mean it’s not on that beach [celle de Knokke, NDLR] that they have to go for it. Here there is a certain level [comprenez «standing», NDLR]. Houses are expensive, apartments are expensive… Everything is expensive,” concluded the other resident, visibly French-speaking.
Words that obviously make people react as the clichés seem to respect. The Telegraaf published this fragment on TikTok, and it has been viewed more than 700,000 times.
