In a recent post on X, a Disney fan posed the question of what the company’s worst mistake was. Among the various responses received, there was one situation that references a 2019 Metro article that talked about the time Disney prevented a grieving father from putting Spider-Man on his son’s tombstone.
The case tells about little Ollie Jones, an avid Marvel fan who at the age of four developed a rare genetic disease. His funeral was a Spider-Man themed celebration, with a balloon carriage and the character’s typical colors. His father, Lloyd Jones, wanted to immortalize Ollie’s memory with an engraving of Spider-Man on his tombstone, but his efforts were frustrated by Disney’s refusal.
“We follow a policy that began with Walt Disney himself and that does not allow the use of characters on tombstones, cemeteries or other memorial markers or funeral urns,” were the company’s words. The family was shocked by the refusal as they did not expect something so simple to become a problem.
The community came out to support the family, showing solidarity in the face of the difficult situation, launching an online petition. In turn, local authorities looked for ways to help the family within the legal limitations imposed by Marvel’s copyright, trying to honor little Ollie’s wish.
