Diving Incident Management at Barges Quarry in Tournai: Safety Protocols and Emergency Response

Around 70 divers were present this Sunday morning at the Barges quarry in Tournai. This Sunday, it was the Royale Aras club which managed the reception of divers in the guard established with the Association Tournaisienne de Plongée. “We are only here to welcome you. Each club must have its own equipment in the event of an incident. We have oxygen candies if he runs out and a defibrillator. But it is the clubs which are responsible during diving, everything is very regulated,” explains Xavier Jonnaert, member of Aras. This Sunday morning, a Dutch-speaking club experienced an incident, fortunately very well managed by Aras.

“A young beginner fiddled with his equipment. In the industry, they say he blew up, it was a very quick, unpleasant recovery. He was about 15 meters deep but the steps to go back up were not respected in this case and the experienced instructor who accompanied him in the water did the same thing. Both were not well, one was bleeding from an ear, probably an eardrum which suffered during the ascent. When this type of incident occurs, we call emergency services directly because there is a risk of pulmonary embolism which we cannot detect on site. It is for this reason that they were taken to a unit at Lille hospital. The protocol was scrupulously respected, both divers were conscious.”

More fear than harm for these Dutch-speaking divers.
