The Apple Watch Ultra is just starting to hit customers’ hands, and unlike previous Apple Watches, it has four exposed screw heads on the bottom of the device. The bottom of the Apple Watch has four P5 pentalobe screws. These are the same type of screws that secure the bottom of your MacBook, and while they’re not as common as a Phillips screwdriver or screwdriver, pentalobe screwdriver Not uncommon either. After removing these four screws, the first complication arose – there is a very small circular ring around each screw. This is undoubtedly among the highly water-resistant ratings of the high-end Apple Watch. When I went to reinstall those initial four screws, it proved nearly impossible to tighten without sliding the x-ring partially out of place.
However, I continued, well aware at this point that part of the watch’s water resistance can be compromised. With those screws removed, the only way to proceed was to use a file Spadger and thin wedges To separate the ceramic back of the watch from the titanium case. It was airtight and by the time it receded, this thin insulation had been destroyed. In addition, two thin, flat cables connect the back of the watch and all of its health sensors to the battery, display, processor, and body of the watch. I had to be careful to separate the two to avoid damaging the cables.
Peeling off the back panel didn’t reveal much on the inside. There was a large black component with the Apple logo on it, but the two buttons used to release the Apple Watch straps popped up, and three of the four springs in the gap in my carpet were gone.
With the watch back panel removed, there was no immediate error from the watch, but it is understandable that my phone could not be connected. There were three more screws – this time with three wings – and small metal plates holding this black component, but once I removed them and started taking them out, it became clear that it was a pretty big job. There seem to be several ribbon cables connected to the other side of it, and from the back of the watch there doesn’t seem to be a good way to separate them. To access it, you will probably have to remove the screen by softening the adhesive, then using a slot to separate it. This is how you can access the inner elements On previous Apple Watches, but the Ultra screen seam didn’t seem to have a great way to open it I was confident I could do without a screen break. The Apple Watch Ultra display is made of sapphire crystal, which, although more scratch-resistant, is likely to be more prone to cracking. This is probably part of the reason why Apple has stretched the watch’s metal body around the flat sides of the screen.
At that point, I put everything back together as best I could. It proved very difficult to reconnect the two cables attached to the bottom of the device. The buttons for removing the watch strap, which are now free from the small springs, vibrate with the watch’s touches. And the small rubber rings around the screw stick out a bit. With the O-rings popping out and the adhesive gasket breaking off, the watch’s water resistance is definitely a far cry from factory standards. I definitely won’t be scuba diving at this point.
