Doctors warn of risks of hangover kit

Carnival is a time of celebration and fun, but it is also known for exaggeration, such as excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. For many, the use of medications such as the so-called “hangover kit” is an alternative to lessen the negative effects of alcohol. Experts warn, however, that the practice can bring health risks.

The so-called “hangover kit” is a combination of drugs and substances that many people use to alleviate the symptoms of excessive alcohol consumption. However, not only do these kits not work, they can also be dangerous for your liver and overall health.

According to hepatologist Cláudia Ivantes, from the Center for Surgery, Gastroenterology and Hepatology (CIGHEP), in Paraná, excessive alcohol consumption can cause liver cirrhosis and other liver diseases. In addition, the use of “hangover kit” medications, such as analgesics and anti-inflammatories, carry additional risks, as they can further overload the liver.

“The liver is the organ responsible for metabolizing alcohol in the body and excessive consumption can lead to inflammation. These medications are usually composed of substances such as acetaminophen and caffeine, which can damage the liver and kidneys, especially in people who already have a pre-existing liver or kidney disease”, warns the doctor.

To avoid the risks of excessive alcohol consumption, the doctor recommends simple measures, such as drinking in moderation, staying hydrated, and avoiding the consumption of alcoholic beverages on an empty stomach.
