Nearly two dozen states only require motorists to display a license plate on their vehicles, but what does the law say in Illinois?

According to Office of the Illinois Secretary of State, motorists are required to display both the front and rear license plates on their vehicles.

Currently, it costs $151 to obtain license plates for a passenger vehicle in the state. Motorists also have the option of purchasing custom license plates for $158 or vanity license plates for $164.

Annual renewal fees are the same price.

There have been some efforts in Springfield to require a single license plate on vehicles, but none have been successful thus far. A recent piece of legislationintroduced by Suburban Northbrook Representative Jonathan Carroll, was introduced in the General Assembly in March 2021, but was referred to the Rules Commission and has not yet moved forward.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has not commented on whether or not he would support requiring license plates to be only on the rear of the vehicle.

The state of Indiana does not require license plates on the front of vehicles. Wisconsin does require one front and one rear license plate when two license plates are issued to motorists.

In all, 21 states do not require license plates on the front of vehicles, according to AutoList. Several Midwestern states, such as Michigan and Ohio, only require a license plate.
