Nearly half of the initial squad falls into the 22, 23, or 24 age bracket, with 47 percent of the players landing squarely in that window. Schad also notes that 47 percent of the players on the initial roster are between 22 and 24. That concentrated block of youth signals a deliberate strategic reset for the franchise under leadership that is explicitly prioritizing future development over immediate standings.
Head coach Jeff Hafley said last week that the team’s success for the 2026 season won’t be measured by their place in the standings because this year’s so much about developing who we are as a football team
as they move into the future. All of that youth could make for some tough sledding for Hafley in his first season on the job, but the hope in Miami is that short-term pain results in a long-term foundation for success that can be measured more tangibly than what they’re pitching this season.
Jon-Eric Sullivan and Quinn Ewers

Sullivan was able to move on from players like Quinn Ewers and Tyrel Dodson in recent days because Sullivan has zero emotional or reputational attachment to them, and it is possible that Sullivan even moved on from a player or two that coach Jeff Hafley may have thought may have helped them win an extra game this season.
Surprising Cuts, Trades, and Position Battles
The aggressive roster turnover produced several notable surprises during Sunday’s league-wide cutdown deadline. Among them, the Dolphins retained seven wide receivers. AJ Henning had a terrific camp, all things considered, and while expectations versus reality show Henning was a big winner this month, keeping him along with Jalen Tolbert on account of the guaranteed salary in a year where Miami is already boasting more restricted cap accounting than any team in the history of the league—plus recently claimed wide receiver Ryan Miller—was a huge surprise. Roster churn also affected the backfield. The Dolphins acquired running back Jarquez Hunter from the Los Angeles Rams at the end of last week, but by Sunday afternoon, Hunter was waived. Shedding the Tutu Atwell guaranteed salary appears to be the main course, and Hunter was apparently just the player they wanted a closer look at to help make that happen.

As the team shifts its attention to early-season preparation, the Dolphins moved cornerbacks Darrell Baker Jr. and Storm Duck to the reserve/physically unable to perform list and placed edge/inside linebacker Trey Moore and defensive lineman Kenneth Grant on the injured reserve list with a designation for return.
With an exceptionally young locker room anchored by a 25.3-year-old average, the path ahead will test both players and coaching staff as they prepare for the season. If Miami finishes 3-14 or 4-13 or 5-12 this season really does not matter, because all that matters is that Hafley builds a solid foundation with a culture of effort, toughness, discipline, grit and relentlessness, even as the team is going to fall behind 21-0 in the first quarter more than once this season.
