Thalf-empty, stands deserted, caciques with absent subscribers: the Republican Party’s high mass this weekend sounded strangely hollow on the outskirts of Washington DC The opportunity was good, however, to parade the troops in order of battle, a few months before the opening of the presidential primaries. But the CPAC, or Conservative Political Action Conference, is no longer a conference in name. The great figures of the GOP (Grand Old Party) have carefully chosen to ignore the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, in National Harbor, on the banks of the Potomac River (Maryland): the leader of the senatorial minority Mitch McConnell, the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, had decided to stay home, fearing boos and jeers. Their wrong? To have denied the champion of all categories of the ultra-conservative cause, Make America Great Again (MAGA), alias Donald Trump.
