James McHugh, a key member of Donegal’s 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship victory, was killed in a two-vehicle collision on the N3 in County Cavan on Monday, August 10, 2026. According to reporting from Extra.ie, the crash occurred at Drummallaght, situated between Virginia and Cavan, shortly before 2:00 p.m. when the car carrying McHugh collided with a van. He was in his 60s and was pronounced dead at the scene before being removed to Cavan General Hospital.

McHugh’s wife, Noreen, was travelling with him in the vehicle at the time of the collision. She sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where she remains in a critical condition, as reported by Extra.ie. Meanwhile, the driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was transported to Cavan General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Sinn Féin councillor Michael McMahon paid tribute to his character in statements to The Irish Mirror, describing him as a gentleman and noting, “James McHugh was a gentleman. He was one of the nicest men you could meet.” McMahon added, “I saw him play in the ’92 All-Ireland Final, he was a great footballer… there is shock and sadness. A Storied Career in the Donegal and Cill Chartha Jerseys
Making his senior county debut in 1990 against Cavan, he became a forward for the squad. In 1992, he helped guide Donegal to capture an All-Ireland title for the county. His performances that season earned him an All-Star award.
His brother Martin was also part of that Donegal set-up. At the club level, James enjoyed success with Cill Chartha, securing Donegal senior football championship titles in 1985, 1989, and 1993. He played in club and county colors until his retirement from county football in 1996.

In the wake of the fatal collision, An Garda Síochána launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The N3 at Drummallaght was temporarily closed to allow Forensic Collision Investigators to carry out an examination, with local diversions put in place to manage traffic.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or was travelling along the N3 between Virginia and Cavan—specifically between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Monday—to come forward. Investigators are also appealing to motorists who possess dashcam or other camera footage from the area at the time to make it available to police.
