DR Congo: Kinshasa prepares for the visit of Pope Francis

Beyond the symbol for the Catholic faithful, the visit of Pope Francis to the DRC takes on a whole new dimension. The country is preparing for a presidential election at the end of the year, all in a context of high security tension in the east of the country. The pontiff’s visit brings hope and peace, but many Congolese also hope that it will shine a spotlight on the country ravaged by conflict and neglected by the international community.

The final turnout stood at 11.4% in the second round of legislative elections held on Sunday in Tunisia. At nearly 90%, it is the highest abstention since the 2011 Revolution that overthrew dictator Ben Ali and marked the advent of democracy in the country.

Hundreds of people, including foreign diplomats, paid tribute in Eswatini to a human rights lawyer and staunch opponent of Africa’s last absolute monarchy, Thulani Maseko, a week after his assassination.

South Africa is experiencing a real energy crisis. If Eskom the national electricity company has huge debts it is partly because many South Africans do not pay their bills. The city of Johannesburg owes almost R4 billion to Eskom. City officials are raiding to make sure the bills are paid. If not, they literally cut the lines of those who illegally reconnected.
