Dr. Onofre Muñoz Hernández: A Lifetime of Excellence in Medical Research and Pediatric Medicine

The National Academy of Medicinechaired by Dr. Germán Fajardo, hosted a tribute to Dr. Germán Fajardo during his lifetime. Onofre Muñoz Hernándeza specialist in pediatrics and infectious disease, the prominent doctor assured in an interview with Sumedic that “in the medicine It is necessary to work for the future.”

Dr. Onofre Muñoz Hernández said he felt very moved and happy for the tribute in life, also a little strange to see part of his life told by third parties, but he appreciated the initiative. It should be noted that this type of tribute is usually carried out when the person honored has already died, but thanks to a group of former students of Dr. Muñoz Hernández, an exception was made and this honor was made for his career during his lifetime.

When talking about what life is for Dr. Onofre Muñoz Hernández, he expressed that “life is teamwork.” In an interview he reiterated that the good work he has done in the research in medicine and in public service it is the result of teamwork and surrounding yourself with intelligent people.

His career in medical research

Dr. Onofre Muñoz Hernández has extensive experience in Medical Investigation and in public service, where he stood out during his time at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) by promoting the PREVENIMSS program.

Muñoz Hernández served as a doctor assigned to the infectious disease department 1973-1975, as head of the infectious disease department 1975-1979; head of the division of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases from 1979-1984.

In public service, Dr. Muñoz Hernández served as director of the Pediatric Hospital, worked at the National Medical Center Siglo XXI from 1984-1991, as Head of Medical Research Services of the IMSS from 1991-1995, Health Research Coordinator of the IMSS from 1995 – 2001, as Director of Medical Benefits of the IMSS from 2001 to 2006, he was director of research at the Federico Gómez Children’s Hospital of Mexico (HIMFG) and was National Commissioner of Medical Arbitration of the Ministry of Health.

The honored doctor is a Full Member of the National Academy of Medicine; He is a member of the National System of Researchers (Level III) and is certified by the Council of Infectious Diseases since 1985.

Dr. Santiago Levy, former head of the IMSS, spoke about the role played by Dr. Onofre Muñoz during his time at the Institute. With a standing ovation, those attending the tribute to Dr. Onofre Muñoz Hernández’s life recognized his work.
