DRC: since the advent of Félix Tshisekedi to power, the public debt has exceeded the milestone of 10 billion USD in 5 years (DGDP)

The General Directorate of Public Debt (DGDP), cited by Radio Okapi, revealed this Sunday, April 7, 2024, that the public debt of the Democratic Republic of Congo has just exceeded the milestone of 10 billion US dollars in five years.

According to this same source, this public debt was reduced in 2010, under the regime of Joseph Kabila, from 14 to 3 billion dollars and maintained at 3 billion until 2019.

The public debt, which increased by 7 billion from 2019 to 2024, is likely, according to the DGDP, to exceed 15 billion US dollars within the next five years, according to forecasts from this structure.

This significant increase in public debt follows central public administration expenditure, which exceeds public revenue observed since 2019.

Estimated at $6 billion, the external public debt was used to cover, among other things, expenses linked to free primary education.

Concerning the domestic public debt which amounts to more than 4 billion dollars, part was used for public expenditure driven by treasury bonds issued by the public treasury to the Central Bank of Congo.
