The EU will have to double its military aid to Ukraine to make up for the gap in US aid as a new package remains blocked for months in Congress.
The above was warned today by the German research institute Kiel.
“It is highly uncertain whether the USA will send additional military aid in 2024,” estimated the institute, which records the military, economic and humanitarian aid pledged and provided by its allies to Ukraine after the Russian invasion in February 2022.
According to Kiel Institute data ending January 15, the US has sent 42.2 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine from February 2022 to December 2023, or about 2 billion euros per month.
The EU’s commitment to Ukraine
The EU has pledged €49.7 billion in military aid, but so far only €35.2 billion has been given for arms and equipment.
“THE Europe it will have to at least double its current military aid with the prospect of no additional aid from the US,” warned Christoph Trebes, head of the Kiel Institute’s group responsible for monitoring aid to Ukraine.
“It’s a challenge, but ultimately it’s a matter of political will,” he added. “EU countries are among the richest in the world and have so far spent just 1% of their 2021 GDP to support Ukraine,” he noted.
In total since February 2022 its partners have pledged a total of 265.1 billion euros to Ukraine, of which 141.3 billion euros for economic aid, 107.5 billion for military and 16.3 billion for humanitarian aid .
According to iefimerida, the main donors of Ukraine are the EU and its member countries (144.1 billion), the USA (67.7 billion) and Britain (15.7 billion).
But even in this case the gap between the promises and the amounts actually given is large, especially for the EU, which has so far offered aid amounting to 77.2 billion euros. This difference is explained because the resources released by the EU concern a period of several years.
