Latvia: EU may agree on €50 billion in financial support to Ukraine on February 1 – 2024-03-03 22:50:01

European Union (EU) leaders are moving toward an agreement next week to transfer about 50 billion euros ($54.1 billion) in aid to Ukraine, Latvian leader Edgars Rinkevics said, according to Bloomberg.

President Edgars Rinkevic said a deal on Ukraine would include either an agreement with all 27 member states, or a “different mechanism” that would operate if unanimity was not reached. Hungary blocked the funding at a meeting in Brussels last month. EU leaders return to a summit on February 1 to finalize a deal.

“But one thing is very clear, Ukraine needs this money, Ukraine must get this money and the European Union must give it,” Rinkevic said in an interview in the Latvian capital, Riga, today Friday (26.1 .2024).

While he hoped a consensus could be reached among all member states, Rinkevic said other proposals included a review mechanism that would see the funds disbursed in installments, an option “that can be negotiated,” he said.
