Dried tomatoes in the air fryer

This dried tomato in the air fryer is definitely one of those recipes that I will make again and again. Possibly because it yielded some of the tastiest sun-dried tomatoes I’ve ever tried. And believe me, it’s easier to do than you think.

How to make dried tomatoes

If you love sun-dried tomatoes, you’ve probably already been a little scared by the price, when you can find a good one available on the market, right?

I confess that I never cared so much, but after making this homemade version, I’m completely in love.

To make your sun-dried tomatoes at home you will need 2 steps:

  • Drying the tomato: Without a doubt, this is the most important part. Because you cannot burn, that is, you will need a low temperature and time for this to happen;
  • Rehydration with fat: Exactly, for it to be delicious you will need to leave it absorbing good olive oil and for that, it will need at least 24 hours.

But I guarantee you, it will be worth every minute. And even though I may sound too complicated when I say it like this, take it from me, test it!

What is the best tomato for making sun-dried tomatoes?

In theory, you can make it with any tomato. Even the cherry tomatoes (remembering that they will need more attention when drying).

But, without a doubt, I highly recommend using Italian. This is because it is soft, does not have many seeds, as well as a more present touch of sweetness, which ends up being a very striking characteristic of dried tomatoes.

How to season my sun-dried tomatoes

To make this recipe you will use seasonings in both preparation moments.

While to dry you will add dry seasonings such as salt, pepper and sugar. When rehydrating, you can add more flavors to the oil.

Of course, you can make it just with olive oil. But surely if you season this mixture with herbs (rosemary, thyme, bay leaves) as well as garlic and even pepper (whether in pieces or flakes), the result will be even better.

How to make sun-dried tomatoes in the conventional oven

Yes, it is possible to dry your tomatoes in a conventional oven. However, most gas ovens have temperature control that is not very precise. Furthermore, many of them have their thermostats starting at 160°.

Therefore, it will be important that you try your best to control the temperature so as not to burn your tomatoes. For this, having a thermometer inside your oven can be a great solution.

Another tip that always works really well when you need a lower temperature is to leave the oven door open a little and keep it at the lowest temperature on the thermostat.

But the cooking time is likely to be a little different, ok?

Without a doubt, this sun-dried tomato is one of the tastiest recipes I’ve ever tried. Easy to make and full of flavor.

Ingredients

  • 800 g of Italian tomatoes;
  • 3 tablespoons of brown sugar;
  • 1 teaspoon of salt;
  • black pepper to taste;
  • enough olive oil;
  • seasonings to taste.

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting your tomatoes in half and removing the seeds;
  2. Then, in a large bowl mix the sugar, salt and pepper with your tomatoes, spreading well;
  3. Arrange your tomatoes in the airfryer basket, placing them next to each other. If your fryer is small, you may need to divide this preparation step;
  4. Program your air fryer to a temperature of 130° and let it bake for 1h to 1h20 or until the tomatoes have reduced in size and are drier;
  5. So, choose a pot, preferably glass, and organize your tomatoes, add the seasonings – here we used 1 clove of garlic and 1 bay leaf, add olive oil until it covers all the tomatoes, close tightly and let it rest for at least 24 hours;
  6. After this time it is ready for consumption.

Notes

  1. The pot needs to be extremely clean. Therefore, I recommend glass jars with metal lids, which can be cleaned with boiling water and 70% alcohol;
  2. The larger the pot, the more empty space you will have, this is a problem because: you may need more oil and also because more air may circulate in your preparation, which increases the possibility of oxidation;
  3. Always use extremely clean utensils to serve yourself;
  4. When the tomatoes are gone, use the richly seasoned olive oil for everyday preparations.
