Authorities on Tuesday arrested one of the drivers involved in the Baltimore vehicular accident that killed six construction workers in March.

This is Melachi Duane Darnell Brown, 20, who is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center, prosecutor Scott Shellenberger said. The official added that authorities are looking for Lisa Adrienne Lea who also has an arrest warrant on her account.

The arrest of the drivers precedes indictments made Monday by a Baltimore grand jury. Against both weigh “six counts of felony negligent homicide by vehicle, six counts of death of a vulnerable person and numerous traffic violations, including aggressive driving,” Shellenberger detailed.

However, Lea is charged with additional drunk driving, according to the charging document.

SALVADORANS AMONG THE DECEASED

The events date back to March 22, 2023 when Lea allegedly rear-ended a 2017 Volkswagen, driven by Brown, and then lost control and struck construction workers working on I-695. The 54-year-old woman was driving a 2017 Acura TLX.

The victims were identified as Rolando Ruiz, 46, a Laurel resident; Carlos Orlando Villatoro Escobar, 43, of Frederick; Jose Armando Escobar, 52, of Frederick; Mahlon Simmons III, 31, of Union Bridge; Mahlon Simmons II, 52, of Union Bridge and Sybil Lee DiMaggio, 46, of Glen Burnie.

Previously, Telemundo 44 tried to contact the relatives of Salvadorans Carlos Orlando Villatoro Escobar and José Armando Escobar, who expressed their devastation as they pleaded for justice. However, they said they did not have the strength to offer statements.

In response to the tragedy, Maryland Governor Wes Moore created a group that will oversee road safety. The panel will include police officers, state highway officials and highway workers, and will be led by Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, who has a background as a transportation engineer.

“The tragedy of the 22nd was something that I think really helped strengthen the decision to make this happen,” he concluded.
