Drunk nurses, stolen drugs, lack of care: scandal in a luxury nursing home in Bruges

New scandal in a luxury nursing home in Bruges. Drunk nurses, stealing patients’ medications. A lack of care… the grievances are numerous. It is former employees who denounce.

In the promotional film of the nursing home, the places seem warm. An establishment of a certain standing. To live there, it takes 3,000 euros per month, but the reality seems very different.

“The residents give a lot of money to receive the luxury for which they pay. But it’s not worth the care, the rooms, the cleaning. It’s dirty, it’s neglected. The nappies sometimes stay on all day. toilets are dirty. There is no cleaning. Residents lie in their beds for a long time”, says Wouter (alias), a former employee.

Residents on their own. A lack of food. A ban on leaving and the absence of consultations. “In the morning, the drugs are put on the breakfast tray, but 90% of the drugs end up in the dishes downstairs. The nurse goes to the next one and does not check if the drugs are taken. There is no feedback”added Wouter.

Employees are sometimes alcoholic and addicted to drugs. The proof in this message from a discussion group between colleagues. A nurse is mentioned. “She put a whole pack in her pocket and took a pill herself. It’s olanzapine 5mg, an antipsychotic. Now she’s in a daze.”can we read.

Employees are contesting these comments and a number of them are defending the new management. On the other hand, they recognize a sometimes very long waiting time.

“We’ve had calls for help that last over an hour. Or a resident who was always sitting on the toilet, and had to wait that long. Of course these people are angry, that’s all normal fact”, says Nancy.

“The longest I’ve seen is a call for help that’s been on hold for 23 hours,” concludes Wouter.

Last year, two complaints were filed.
