DTI pursues trade agreements despite diplomatic tensions with China

According to BusinessMirror, the Department of Trade and Industry is continuing its push for trade pacts to broaden market reach for local exporters, despite ongoing diplomatic strain with China that prompts concerns over potential impacts on commerce and investment.

Pushing Trade Pacts Amid Regional Friction

The trade department’s unwavering focus on expansion comes during a delicate diplomatic period. A legislator suggested that authorities contemplate measures targeting junior Chinese diplomats following the contentious statements made by Ambassador Jing Quan, while deferring the ultimate choice regarding the ambassador’s diplomatic standing to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Despite these overlapping geopolitical currents, trade officials continue to pursue pacts designed to insulate local industries. The Department of Agrarian Reform, the DTI, and the University of Southern Mindanao recently formalized a partnership to help agrarian reform beneficiaries in Cotabato gain stronger business skills, access technology and research, and better opportunities to grow their enterprises.

Philippine Auto Sales Fall as Consumer Demand Weakens

While the trade agenda presses outward, domestic economic conditions face substantial pressure. Cumulative vehicle purchases dropped by a double-digit margin in September, leaving the local automotive sector facing the last third of 2026 with declining sales figures. The downturn prompted Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. to abandon its earlier target of growing sales by 6 percent, setting a revised goal merely to match last year’s performance as economic headwinds dampen consumer demand.

Concurrently, regulatory oversight continues to tighten across digital and commercial spaces. The Bureau of Internal Revenue announced that it has issued more than 52,700 Certificates of Registration with Registration Seal Badges to online sellers, service providers, and content creators. As regulatory compliance expands and trade officials look toward new international markets, the broader question remains how effectively the country can shield its export ambitions from escalating regional friction.
