DTT will soon be available on 5G smartphones, no need for a package

A technology that manufacturers want to push in France, in particular thanks to the Olympic Games taking place in two years.

Favorite channels on their phone without using the data from your plan. This was presented by TowerCast on Wednesday, during a presentation where three smartphones without a SIM card displayed the programs of various channels on their small screen. All this made possible thanks to the “5G broadcast”.

This is a feature that has been integrated into 5G for almost 5 years, with an authorization issued by the CSA to TowerCast to use certain DTT frequencies on certain test sites, for compatible smartphones. The technology has already been tested at Roland Garros but also at Eurovision and the industry is counting on the Olympic Games taking place in Paris to develop it.

Particularly in terms of regulation, but also by launching “pre-commercial” services. The Managing Director of Towercast explains that “5G is a small revolution for us. TNT, you will have it in your pocket. This mobility is audience time to capture for publishers“. However, not everything is ready for a large-scale launch yet. Indeed, the demonstration was carried out on specific smartphones provided by Qualcomm, the chips supporting this technology not being mass-produced or integrated by the manufacturers. However, that could change in two to four years.

At TowerCast, we plan to deploy the technology in about 5 years, but that’s not really a concern. “The challenge is to install DTT in consumption patterns after 2030”says its leader. At a time when the number of households using this reception mode is falling, this technological leap could prove to be a life-saver for DTT, the broadcast of which began in 2005. Other experiments have been carried out, such as that of the use of HbbTV for the Arte and Salto platform Last year.
